St. Patrick’s Day is (thankfully) still not a gift-giving holiday for most families.
However, leprechaun traps are wildly popular traditions these days.
But what do you do when you don’t catch a leprechaun?
Because… you know… that is the likely outcome.
I’ve never actually heard of a leprechaun being caught. Have you?
Maybe I just haven’t been lucky enough.
Anyway, your children are going to wonder what happened the next morning when they don’t see a real leprechaun stuck in their carefully designed trap.
These cute leprechaun trap notes provide various options for answering their questions.
There’s a free PDF download at the bottom, too!

Note to Kids from a Leprechaun
Leprechauns are notoriously snarky creatures.
Fortunately, they’re pretty good at writing child-friendly letters for St. Patrick’s Day.
This is the design I used for my kids when they put out their shoebox trap!
But if the pre-written letter isn’t quite what you’re looking for, I’ve included options to change it!
You can print a blank version of the design and handwrite or type in a leprechaun response tailored to your trap and the goodies the leprechaun leaves behind.
Or you can open the design template in Canva (a free software) and directly edit the text before printing.
Bonus: This download comes with small leprechaun feet footprints you can cut out and use as a template for leaving gold glitter tracks leading to your leprechaun trap!
It also comes in multiple printable sizes: a full-page 8.5×11 (US letter) sheet, 5.75×7.5 (half a sheet), and 4×5.25. The last two sizes are on the same page so they’ll print at the same time.
Treats to Leave with the Leprechaun Note
If using the note as written above, you’ll want to leave a treat of gold for your little one!
I recommend chocolate gold coins or gold-wrapped Rolo candies.
Just make sure the gold you leave for the leprechaun the night before is something different (and realistic), like these plastic gold coins.
Young children usually won’t think twice about whether or not they’re fake.

Leprechaun Note in Poem Form
Yes, the previous leprechaun note is technically a poem since it rhymes and has a rhythm.
But this one is longer and a bit more… poetic.
If your child is an avid reader, this poem is an excellent alternative to the ordinary leprechaun trap notes.
It’s great for expanding their vocabulary, with a few words young children don’t get to hear very often.
It should open up a great conversation with your intelligent little one!
Just as the one above, this one comes with little footprints you can use with glitter or confetti to create leprechaun tracks.
Don’t forget the chocolate coins or Rolos!
