When I got pregnant with my second child, it was a bit of… a surprise. Even so, I had a girl’s name at the ready! Our first child was a girl, and I’d had a runner-up name that I loved so much I knew I’d use it for my second daughter. But then I found out we were having a boy, and I was stumped. The boy name we had chosen for our first child, before we knew she was a girl, suddenly didn’t seem appropriate or good enough. And I had to go back to the drawing board! Instead of going by my gut or only how names sounded (though that’s important), I decided to start looking at baby boy names and meanings.
Choosing a cute baby boy name by its meaning instead of by its popularity is a WONDERFUL decision! The name will hold real value for you and your child because it was chosen with love and care.
So what are some good names for a boy? What baby boy name means strong, brave, or a gift from God? What is the most beautiful baby boy name? Well, it turns out there’s not just one answer for any of those questions!
I’ve rounded up 120 unique, handsome, and strong baby boy names and meanings for you to peruse (without having to weed out some that I think most of us will universally agree are not good, at least not anymore). It’s a mix of the most popular American baby boy names from the last few years as well as some trendy up-and-comer boy names and vintage, classic names that never go out of style.
A lot of these names have Biblical meanings, particularly the well-known, traditional ones. That doesn’t stop non-religious people from using them everyday though, so go with your gut and love of the sound more than the meaning in the end. But there are plenty of secular baby boy names on this list to choose from as well!
Think of this as an abbreviated “meaning of male names” dictionary that is sure to have a baby boy name you’ll love! The meanings and origins were mostly obtained through Nameberry and BabyNames.

5 Newly Trending American Boy Baby Names and Meanings
Genesis
Meaning: beginning; new birth
Where You’ve Heard It: the band Phil Collins was once in; the first book of the Bible
The way things have been in America lately, I think a lot of parents are hoping for a fresh start with the next generation. As they say, children are the future! Genesis has an earthy air about it.
Saint
Meaning: literally saint or holy person
Where You’ve Heard It: from the Bible
Yes, Kim and Kanye chose Saint for one of their children, but they weren’t the first to do it. The name was on the rise in popularity well before that, and just like Genesis, it’s possible parents are hoping to raise good, wholesome children to help make the world a better place.
Baker
Meaning: one who bakes
Where You’ve Heard It: as a common last name; it’s new as a first name
Baker is a baby boy name that sounds very wholesome and clean-cut, like Carter. It won’t be surprising to find it growing in popularity, particularly among affluent families.
Kairo
Meaning: victorious one
Where You’ve Heard It: it’s a spelling variation on Cairo, the Capital of Egypt
Generally pronounced K-eye-roh, this is a new top pick for parents looking for something edgy and unique for their baby boys. It also has a fairly masculine ring to it.
Watson
Meaning: son of Walter
Where You’ve Heard It: Sherlock Holmes’ constant sidekick; Harry Potter actress Emma Watson; Spider-Man’s love interest Mary Jane Watson
There’s an air of sophistication with a hint of whimsy in the name Watson, making it an excellent choice for a well-rounded child.
5 Baby Boy Names Losing Popularity in America
Aaden
Meaning: a variation of Aiden, which means little fire
Why It’s Losing Popularity: Quite frankly, the spelling is awful. No one will ever assume it’s spelled like that the first time around; it’s just a ploy to get your kid to the front of the line. The fire is dying on this attempt at a first name.
Dilan
Meaning: love; son of the sea
Why It’s Losing Popularity: As a variation on Dylan, it’s a poor choice. My instinct is to pronounce it Dill-anne, making it sound quite feminine for a baby boy name. It looks like other parents are discovering the problem, because this spelling is quickly dropping in the ranks.
Craig
Meaning: from the rocks
Why It’s Losing Popularity: The meaning isn’t exactly poetic, is it? Many people also think of the late model and Hydroxycut spokeswoman Jenny Craig when they hear the name, too. The name may also feel just a little old-fashioned for new baby boys now.
Mike
Meaning: one who is like God
Why It’s Losing Popularity: Mike actually isn’t such a bad name – well, nickname, anyway. Parents seem to be going back to traditional versions of a lot of popular names (after all, Michael is still firmly in the top 100 baby boy names in the United States). Setting your son up with a nickname as his legal name might not be the best idea.
Harper
Meaning: harp player
Why It’s Losing Popularity: Despite climbing the baby boy name chart a little bit, it appears the association of Harper as a girl’s name is too strong for it to hold on. The meaning of the name Harper isn’t all that exciting, either, particularly for boys.
How to Agree on a Baby Boy Name with Your Partner
I mentioned at near the top of this article a rating chart download to help you get on the same page as your partner. But what does it actually look like? How are you supposed to rate over a hundred boy names each?
It’s not as scary as it sounds. Once you start looking at the names and checking them off, you’ll start breezing through it. Just go with your instincts, and tell your partner to do the same! Don’t overthink it. You might even come up with totally new names you like in the process, and there’s blank spaces for you to write those in, too.
Then get together with your partner and call out each name one at a time, with both of you saying your ratings out loud. You’ll not only know if you agree right away, but hearing the tone of voice will help you know just how serious your partner is about vetoing a name you LOVE.

More Baby Boy Names with Meanings to Consider
If there wasn’t a name on this list that jumped out at you as the perfect name for your baby boy, that’s okay! This is by no means a definitive list of trendy boy names. Maybe you and your partner tried the rating system above and still couldn’t find one you both loved.
There are more resources that can help you find the perfect baby boy name (with a great meaning behind it). Check out my comprehensive guide to picking a boy name!
Plus, check out the book The Best Baby Names for Boys on Amazon. It’s just a list of really excellent names from traditional to modern to trendy. There’s also journaling prompts to help you figure out what you like best!

I love looking through names lists… Love that both my boys names are on here – William and Elijah.
These are great names! I don’t have any kids yet but love the name James. However my fiance hates it, so annoying, haha. I will save this post for future baby names discussions.
