When thinking of ways to celebrate May the Fourth Be With You (Star Wars Day), I wanted something really fun that both of my kids could enjoy.
I thought a Star Wars scavenger hunt around the house would be perfect!
Both of my children have been big Star Wars fans since they were little, so I created a photo-matching hunt to start.
I also made a scavenger hunt with actual clues for when they became old enough to read!
And then I realized I have Star Wars nerd friends who would probably like to get it on a Star Wars scavenger hunt for adults, too.
Thus, Seeking Skywalker, the Jedi Training Trilogy was born!
This game is great for a fun day at home with the kids or even a Star Wars-themed birthday party.
Just print multiple copies of the first clue for each child attending and let them race to the finish (or work together to solve the clues)!
Why is it called Seeking Skywalker?
When creating this game, the original idea was to write nine clues, each of them related to one of the nine Star Wars movies.
To make it more cohesive, I decided to make sure each clue was related to the trials of one of the Skywalker family members in each film.
You’ll find clues related to Anakin, Luke, Leia, Kylo Ren, and… well… you’ll see!
Who can play this Star Wars scavenger hunt?
Almost anyone over the age of one year old will be able to play this game!
That’s exactly why I made three different versions: to make it fun and challenging (but not TOO hard) for everyone.
Episode I: Little Kids is appropriate for ages two to six, and is solely a picture-matching game.
Episode II: Big Kids is appropriate for kids seven and older. It includes traditional rhyming scavenger hunt clues.
They’re simple brain teasers to get your kids thinking critically and are related to events from each of the nine Star Wars Episodes!
Episode III: Adults is a great version for people who can either handle a more difficult scavenger hunt riddle or are big enough Star Wars superfans to know how each Episode might be related to the clue already.
I’m confident some older children will be able to play this version!
The main thing to remember is that you do not need to have watched any of the Star Wars movies to play! This game uses movie facts in the riddles, but the clues themselves are based on everyday objects and surroundings.

How do you play Seeking Skywalker?
Episode I: Little Kids Version
You’ll get full-color printables of 14 different Star Wars clip art characters to cut out individually and place in or around your home. Just a little scotch tape should be plenty to keep it in place. Since small children have a tendency to grab-and-go, I’d tape them where they’re visible but just out of reach of the younger players. There are two sizes of the color printables to choose from, depending on how difficult to spot you’d like them to be!
Each child playing should get their own character tracking sheet (and there’s a spot to write their name so multiple players’ sheets don’t get mixed up). I would wander around with the little kids, giving them clues for where they might look next. If they’re solely looking in the living room and not expanding their search, a simple “I think there’s something strange on the swing set outside!” can nudge them in the right direction.
The tracking sheet has 14 different characters in a black-and-white clip art form. Your child can mark them off in any way you’d like! If you trust them with a pen or pencil, give them one to mark off the characters as they spot them. An alternative would be a pack of Star Wars stickers to place over each one as it’s found.
These are very young children, so I see nothing wrong with going by the honor system here. But you can always quiz them when they come to claim their prize to see if they can list off some of the places they spotted character cards. 😉
Episodes II & III: Big Kids & Adults
These versions of the game both have a series of riddle clues to get the player from one specific location to the next until they complete all nine tasks and find the Grand Prize.
If more than one person is playing at the same time, you can simply print multiple copies of the first clue and hand them to each player. Seal the clues in envelopes for a little extra mystery (like these size A8 envelopes).
You’ll also want to print a separate tracking sheet for each player. This sheet is for them to write down where they found each clue, so each player will also need something to write with. The tracking sheet is to ensure the player went through all nine trials instead of seeking clues out of order and skipping ahead!
While in the little kids’ version the player must simply ask for their prize after finding all the characters, in the big kids’ and adults’ version, they must actually solve the last puzzle to get to where the Grand Prize is located!
How long does this Star Wars scavenger hunt take to finish?
For any scavenger hunt, the answer to this depends largely on the player’s skill at solving the riddles. That being said, none of the riddles are extremely cryptic, and there are only so many places in a home to hide nine clues in the first place.
I would say this game will take roughly 30 minutes for most people to play (making it a perfect Star Wars party game). A couple of the trials do require a little bit of work to get to the clue, but none of them are very difficult or time-consuming. The youngest of children who play without any help in solving the clues may need more time.
Can this scavenger hunt be played when it’s raining?
Yes! While there is a primary version of the game that involves three outdoor clues, there are also extra replacement clues for when it’s raining outside (or you don’t have the toys needed for a couple of the outside clues). So this game CAN be played 100% indoors!
If you do want to play all three outdoor clues, you will need a mailbox (which you should have already), a small kiddie pool (you can get inflatable ones very cheap at Walmart), and a sandbox or sand table (my kids have and love this sand & water table).
One of the clues is also intended to lead to a vehicle, so if you don’t have a garage, this would end up being an outside clue (there is not an alternative version for this riddle included).
What is required to play this scavenger hunt?
The only thing actually required is the ability to print the download, whether it’s on your home computer or through a printing service. If printing at home, I strongly recommend using cardstock for durability. You’ll also need scissors or a paper trimmer for cutting out the clues and elements.
A couple of the clues have the option of being placed in water for retrieval. While it’s not required and both Clues can be put next to/outside of the water, if you do want to submerge the clues, you will need a laminator and 5×7 laminating pouches.
The clues (or the alternative clues) all lead to areas or objects commonly found in most homes. If you do not have a TV or video tablet, a bookcase, or a vehicle of some kind, you might struggle to play this game in its entirety. You can still play and skip the clues that lead to things you do not have, but of course, you will not get to “experience” all nine Episodes!
Although that is all that’s required to play, I like to go the extra mile with fun activities like this! I’ll be going over potential Grand Prizes and how to really set the scene for each clue. But first, for any kids playing, I am in love with this DIY no-sew Jedi robe to get them in the Jedi training spirit!
Star Wars scavenger hunt prize ideas
I strongly recommend having a prize at the end (whether it’s kids or adults playing), because it provides the player with a sense of urgency and a desire to finish the game.
With kids, it doesn’t have to be anything fancy, because they’ll find the scavenger hunt itself extremely entertaining. For the younger ones, I have a DIY pool noodle lightsaber tutorial you can use as their grand prize for finding all of the characters!
The older kids probably won’t be impressed with a foam lightsaber (but grown-ups tend to get a kick out of them!). If they don’t already own a light-up lightsaber, this one would be a great prize option:
- Scream saber lightsaber with sound FX: featuring exciting electronic…
- 3 sound modes: kids ages 4 and up can pretend to battle with Star Wars…
- Lightsaber duels your way: “ah-choo!” “pew-pew!” “meow!”…
- Look for other Star Wars role play items: fans can look out for more…
- Skill level: intermediate
If they do already have a lightsaber, you could always have a different Star Wars-related toy as the prize, or something unrelated they’ve been asking for. Perhaps a puzzle like the one below would be great since their minds will already be in solving mode!
- 400 PIECE JIGSAW PUZZLE – This 400-piece jigsaw puzzle is the…
- HIGHEST QUALITY MATERIALS – The puzzle pieces are thick and sturdy….
- APEX PUZZLE IMAGERY – Relax and enjoy the puzzling process while…
- FULL COLOR BONUS POSTER – Every Buffalo Games puzzle includes a full…
- PERFECT GIFT – Puzzles are not only great gifts for any and all…
For adults, I’d recommend prizes based on who you’ve actually convinced to play. A nice Star Wars collectible item (like a Jedi robe or higher-end lightsaber), a plush Baby Yoda, or even their favorite alcoholic beverage would be a nice surprise at the end.
Star Wars-style scenery
There are a few extra props I used to make the clue spots extra fun and Star Wars-y. I don’t want to get into too much detail or share location pictures here in case there are players Googling the game trying to cheat (I’m on to you!!).
However, you WILL get details on exactly how I set up each amazing clue scene when you get the printable game!
Here’s a list of extra props I used in setting up my Star Wars scavenger hunt:
- Fake flowers
- Red plastic tablecloth
- Black construction paper
- Empty butter spread tub
- Green liquid food coloring
And while the Seeking Skywalker package includes printables of each character you can cut out, you can make your clue scenes even more fun if you have some real Star Wars action figures (like Darth Vader, Luke, Leia, Han, Yoda, Kylo Ren, and Rey).
Your printable game will also include some extra-fun optional cutouts to enhance the scene at each clue location!
How much does this Star Wars game cost?
