Have you just had the uber-exciting ultrasound that revealed you’re having a baby girl, or are you trying to nail down names for both genders “just in case”?
Either way, congratulations on your baby, and make good use of this extensive list of baby girl names! And if you need some “just in case” boy names, be sure to check out my comprehensive guide to picking boy names!
This list contains the most recently released list of the top 1000 baby girl names being used in the United States today, per the Social Security Administration.
You’ll find a lot of the prettiest girl names (because who doesn’t want their precious little girl to have a beautiful name?).
You’ll see some unique and rare baby girl names creeping up to the top of the charts as well.
Some of these girl names are short, some are long; some of the baby names on this list are cute, while others are classic.
One thing is for sure: America is most definitely diverse, and these most popular baby girl names are evidence of that.
You are sure to find something on this list that, even if not absolutely perfect, will inspire you to come up with the one that is.
At the bottom of the list, I’ve also done a comparison of the top baby girl names from 100 years ago (1923) to see how they’re faring these days!
Things to Consider When Choosing a Baby Name
Potential Middle Names (and Initials)
If you want to honor a family member, close friend, or even a favorite fictional character with your daughter’s middle name, be sure to keep that name in mind when choosing a first name. You’ll want both names to flow well together.
Also, keep in mind any words or common acronyms the initials will all spell together.
You can ensure they don’t spell anything obvious, or you can purposefully turn them into a word! (My son’s initials are HAM on purpose, for instance.)
Who They’ll Share it With
The most important research you can do on your baby girl’s name is every person, place, or thing it could possibly be associated with.
There are not likely to be many names left in existence that aren’t associated with a single bad person, but some stand out more than others (like Adolf, for instance).
A Google search is all you’ll likely need to dig up anything particularly awful.
Some things will be minor annoyances, and you’ll need to decide if your favorite name is worth the association.
You may not care, and that’s great!… But your daughter might when she gets older.
Think of any movie characters, subjects of songs, infamous celebrities, or politicians that might go by that name, and choose wisely.
Gender Assumptions
Names that were once considered gender-specific to boys have since become gender-neutral, like Jordan, Blake, and Charlie.
However, there are some names on the rise for use as a girl’s name that haven’t fully made that leap yet, like Sawyer and Elliott.
If you’re fine with people likely making the wrong assumptions about your child’s gender based on her name, this may not be a big deal to you.
The discussions about gender have become much more open in recent years, and more and more people are fighting for the right to do whatever and be whomever they want without consideration of gender.
And that’s a good thing!
Just cut people some slack if they’re surprised to finally meet your child in person and discover she is not a boy (if your daughter does end up gender-conforming).
Old habits are hard to break, after all.

Popular Baby Girl Names from 100 Years Ago
I was curious about what girl names were the most popular a hundred years ago – 1923, to be exact!
A significant number of names are cyclical, fading from immense popularity for a generation or two (or more) before shooting back up into the mainstream.
So I wanted to see which ones are hanging on over time!
I compared the top 100 baby girl names from 1923 with the top 1000 girl names from the most recent report to see how much things have changed.
If you’re looking for baby girl names that are traditional or easily recognized, but no longer overused, you might be interested in these baby girl names that were in the top 100 one hundred years ago but are nowhere to be seen in the top 1000 names now.
I was absolutely fascinated by this!

What about names that are even more popular now than they were a hundred years ago?
These are the baby girl names ranking higher on the most recent list than they were in 1923 – and they were already in the top 100 then!

- Hazel
- Grace

- Stella
- Lucy
- Audrey
And finally, while still popular enough to be in the top 1000 list today, these top 100 baby girl names from 1923 are just barely hanging on (and perhaps could use a boost from you?). They rank in spots between 900 and 1000 now.

You’ve now read enough baby girl names to either inspire you in choosing your new baby’s name or thoroughly confuse you with too many choices. (Haha!)
Usually, names in the top 500 or so hang on for a long time before disappearing below the 1000 mark. 2019 was the first year Emma wasn’t in the #1 spot since 2014, and Emma has been in the top 10 since 2002!
I once had a neighbor with a daughter named Emma, I have a niece named Avery, and my daughter’s name is Lily!
Do you know anyone with the names on this list (because you should)? Which names are your favorite?
Absolutely loved this list so many names to choose from. These are my favorites Meliyaha
